Who is Hung OK? My 30-Year Journey from IT to Honest Hospitality

My name is Hung. Many people call me Hung OK, or Oliver. I am not a luxury travel influencer. I am not a get-rich-quick guru. I am simply a 52-year-old man who has spent over 30 years working in technology and hospitality, and who is now starting over in a very different way.

If you are looking for inflated promises, luxury resort check-ins, or hidden affiliate links, this is not the place. But if you want honest, practical insights about digital nomad life, Southeast Asia travel, and hospitality tech from someone who actually lives it... keep reading.

1996–2010: Building a Foundation in Hardware and Telecom

In 1996, I started my first job at a telecom repair shop. Back then, there was no high-speed internet, no smartphones. There was only manual skill, a soldering iron, and a lot of patience.

Over the years, I worked my way up from a repair technician to a senior technical role at the Nokia Care system. At that time, I thought I would spend my entire life fixing hardware. I thought the world would stay exactly as it was.

The 2010 Pivot: Embracing IT, Digital Marketing, and Hospitality

But around 2010, everything changed. The traditional telecom repair industry started to shrink. Smartphones became ubiquitous, and people stopped repairing old devices.

I faced a critical choice: hold onto what I already knew and risk becoming obsolete, or swallow my pride and learn everything from scratch in my 30s.

I chose to learn. I transitioned into Information Technology and Digital Marketing. More importantly, I found my niche in the hospitality industry—hotels, resorts, and tourism services. The late nights learning HTML, SEO, and digital campaigns were tough, but they completely shifted my perspective on how the internet works.

14 Years in Hospitality: Why I Created Tap2Stay

For the past 14 years, I have worked deeply in hospitality tech and marketing. I’ve seen the struggles of boutique hotels and small resorts firsthand.

I realized that technology is not just about running property management software. Technology is about independence.

I watched small hotel owners lose 15% to 25% of their revenue to Online Travel Agencies (OTAs). They had great service, but no direct booking strategy. They were devastated by unfair negative reviews and had no idea how to handle them. That is why I helped build Tap2Stay and 3H Decor—to help accommodation businesses reduce OTA commissions, handle online reputation, and build their own direct revenue streams.

The "Semi-Retired" Digital Nomad Reality

Today, I live in a state I call "semi-retired." I no longer work a rigid 8-to-5 job, but I have certainly not stopped working.

I am on a journey as a Digital Nomad. But I do not travel to check in at luxury infinity pools or show off a fake lifestyle. I travel to understand. I travel to experience how the world works, to test the reality of remote work, and to find genuine, affordable places for people who actually need to work while traveling.

The digital nomad reality is not always glamorous. It is about finding a cafe with stable Wi-Fi in a new city, managing different time zones, and being resourceful. I don't carry a massive camera crew. My gear is simple: a reliable laptop, a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, and a DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. That is all you need to document reality.

Why I Share Honest Reviews and Guides on 5bien.com

Through my travels and work, I meet many remote workers, freelancers, and Workaway enthusiasts who want to explore Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

But the internet is full of inflated reviews, hidden affiliate links, and spammy recommendations. It is hard to find honest information.

That is why I created 5bien.com. I write simple, practical, and mature guides. I review resorts, co-working spaces, and Workaway hosts based on reality, not on how good the lighting is for a photo.

I do not accept payments for positive reviews. I do not push hidden affiliate links. I just share what I find, from my own perspective, so you can make your own informed decisions.

A quick note: While I share my real experiences with visas, Workaway, and remote work, immigration rules change constantly. Always check official government sources before making any travel or work decisions.

No Magic, Just Reality

I cannot promise you that reading my blog will make you rich or give you a perfect nomad life.

But I can promise you honesty. The honesty of a 52-year-old who has been a hardware technician, an IT marketer, a hospitality consultant, and now a digital nomad.

If you value practical advice, transparent reviews, and a calm approach to travel and remote work... you are in the right place.

Welcome to my journey. Let us walk a part of it together.
